Why is pharmacy temperature control such a hot topic?
Effective temperature monitoring is an absolute necessity for modern day pharmacies. In order to guarantee the safety of patients, pharmacies must ensure drugs and vaccines are stored at certain temperatures, with all such measurements properly documented. The pharmacy guidelines on temperature monitoring, as issued by the MHRA, outline that controlled drugs and vaccines stored in pharmacy fridges must meet benchmarks to ensure the maximum efficacy and shelf-life.
With pharmacy audits becoming more thorough, compliance to guidelines in terms of climate control has become a key part of the regulatory process. To meet such strict protocols, both temperature monitoring and accurate record-keeping are absolutely vital for any facility storing prescription drugs.
The problem is, with the absence of an automated system in place, this not only requires time-consuming work from the pharmacy team, it also increases the risk of mistakes or oversights. Some pharmacists for example, simply perform a daily check on their fridges to see they are still working. What they fail to recognise however is, not only does this fail to reveal any fluctuations, for instance when the fridge door has been open too long, but more importantly it doesn’t give you the chance to react quickly should there be a malfunction.
This can have a hugely negative effect on a pharmacy’s reputation, not to mention the loss of expensive drugs means an enormous financial burden. More concerning still, is the risk of prescriptions not having the intended effect, due to the product themselves being tainted because of improper temperature control. Not everyone is aware, but if pharmaceutical products aren’t stored correctly, this can drastically reduce their effectiveness.

So, what can pharmacists do to be sure their pharmaceuticals and therefore patients are kept safe? As all those in the Food, Service or Catering industries will know well, the ability to make quick temperature spot checks is an essential part of your daily routine. There are a number of foods which must be cooked at a minimum internal temperature in order to remove any harmful bacteria; from meat and poultry, to eggs and other products. Utilising a food thermometer is the easiest way of taking such measurements; ensuring both safety and that food is cooked to the desired taste. They also provide an easy way of making certain that prepared food is kept at the appropriate temperature prior to being served (although you of course need to make sure you either use a different thermometer to measure cooked foods, or sanitise appropriately).

Since a food thermometer is such an important tool in food preparation, making sure you have a fully functioning, reliable thermometer available at all times is absolutely essential. The problem is, with so many cheap, poorly manufactured thermometers available, many businesses are tempted by the low price point. To an extent this is understandable, if the person responsible for sourcing the company’s equipment is looking through a brochure or website, it can be hard to differentiate between models when it comes to things like robustness and build quality. It looks the same, so I may as well buy the cheap one, right? In the short term, perhaps this is the case, but a few months/years down the line, try taking another look at the numbers when it comes to replacement units. You’d be surprised.
In many cases, we’ve found the frequent turn-around of thermometers is more of an issue than you’d think, particularly for those facilities and restaurant chains which are buying in large quantities. And with costs continuing to rise in the restaurant industry, any way a business can cut costs and improve efficiency is of course very welcome. According to the latest Benchmarking Report from ALMR Christie & Co. operating costs across all trading styles now stand at an all-time high of 51.5% of turnover, with growth across the entire survey at 1.1%.
Some of the cheaper models are so flimsy, with such poor build quality they can almost be considered disposable. For example, say you’re paying £15 to £20 per thermometer, and these are being replaced every 2-3 months because of it being dropped or getting wet, the battery running out, probe snapping or the unit just packing in all-together because of poor build quality, this soon adds up and isn’t doing much good for your equipment budget. Not to mention the added hassle of getting more equipment ordered on a regular basis, and the risk of a situation where there is no available thermometer to make a simple spot check, leaving you no adequate way of making the required checks, and ultimately putting you and your customers at risk.

In this situation, it may make sense to explore a more robust option, for instance a robust waterproof thermometer which could last 5 to 6 times longer. Cheap thermometers will only offer very basic functions whilst top quality thermometers can offer more than one measuring function, for example infrared for non-contact measurement as well as a penetration probe for core temperatures. In terms of taking accurate measurements, by using a cheap thermometer you can’t be certain you are even getting the correct measurements and of course when using a measurement device accuracy can be critical.

Install, inspect and service air conditioning and ventilation systems in ducts and at outlets
The correct and efficient adjustment of ventilation and air conditioning systems makes very high demands on measurement technology, due to various measurement locations and different flow velocities. Whether the precise determination of volume flow, quick spot measurements in ducts or the recording of turbulent flows at outlets: without suitable measuring instruments, it is impossible to ensure optimum indoor air quality in residential and non-residential buildings. Immediate effects of indoor air pollution often resemble those from a common cold or illness, making a potential issue even more difficult to detect. There are several illnesses that result from contaminated indoor air. Some of the more minor effects include irritated eyes, nose or skin as well as an increased likelihood of irritation of the eyes, coughing, headaches, dizziness, fatigue and nausea.
The most accurate measurement results can be achieved by measuring directly in a duct. However, since ventilation ducts are in practice frequently hidden or inaccessible, it is often necessary to resort to outlet measurements. In addition to this, turbulence in ducts and at outlets can often falsify measurements as well. These are just a few of the issues that engineers may encounter when carrying out precise flow velocity measurements.
Accurate and convenient measurement in ducts.
Ventilation and air conditioning systems are indispensable for indoor air quality; for them to function smoothly and efficiently, they must be tested regularly, and if necessary readjusted. If the air flows in ventilation ducts are smaller than intended, the removal of indoor loads (hot, cold and substance loads) can under certain circumstances not be guaranteed.
If the ventilation duct is accessible, duct measurement is the best solution. This is because air flows are measured most accurately directly in the duct. However, it must be considered that the flows in the duct are usually non-homogenous and turbulent. To obtain reliable results despite this, measurements should always be taken at several measuring points over the duct cross-section. In these grid measurements, a mean flow velocity is derived from the individual measurement values.

Precise measurement at outlets.
The quality of the indoor air depends crucially on whether the air input or output volume flows are optimally adjusted. For this reason, the measurement is taken directly at the outlet during adjustment work. However, inaccessible ventilation ducts also make measurements at outlets necessary. At swirl and plate outlets or ventilation grilles however, turbulence is created, which can falsify the measurement results and which are essential to consider.
