Prep, the high-performance frying oil brand, have teamed up with food safety and measurement equipment experts testo, in a bid to help foodservice customers further extend the lifespan of its range of long-life oils.
As part of the partnership, Prep is using the award-winning testo 270 Cooking Oil Tester in its oil management training, and is now offering the product to food service customers throughout the UK.
The testo 270 enables users to determine in seconds whether oil needs changing, helping to guarantee consistent cooking results, whilst saving customers time, effort and money on unnecessary changes.
Olivia Shuttleworth, Prep brand manager, said: “At Prep, we are committed to helping all our customers to maximise the lifespan of their frying oil, so they can produce great tasting food for longer– saving time, reducing waste and cutting costs in the process.
“When looked after and managed effectively, Prep long life oils last up to three times longer than standard, extended life oils – and regular testing is integral to effective oil management.
“The Testo 270 is a quick, effective way for customers to check their Prep oil, ensuring they get maximum lifespan from every change.”
Regular testing is integral to effective oil management
The Testo Cooking Oil Tester works by testing the percentage levels of Total Polar Material (TPM) in the frying oil. TPM builds up in the oil during regular use, and measuring these levels is the most reliable and accurate way to measure oil quality and cleanliness of frying oil.
Ashton Baylis, Testo Product manager, said:
“It’s impossible to know when frying oil needs changing simply by looking at it – it needs to be tested regularly.
“The Testo 270 is quick and easy to use, accurately measuring the percentage of TPM in the oil in a few seconds. It provides clear notifications to kitchen teams, so they know when it’s time to make a change. Over time, this can help to reduce oil consumption by up to 20%, whilst guaranteeing you are cooking with clean, effective oil.”
The testo 270 allows you to determine the quality of cooking oil faster and more reliably than ever before
The Testo 270 offers intuitive operation and a clear, easy to understand monitoring system. The screen changes colour to show when oil needs changing, turning from green when oil is good, to amber when it is approaching time to change, and red when oil needs changing.
Prep offers a comprehensive range of oil management resources, including an oil management guide, oil management equipment and a dedicated oil management app – all developed to helping customers maximise the lifespan of frying oil. Further information and guidance on oil management can be found here.

Next week testo will be at the Pharmacy show in Birmingham (8th-9th October), discussing how to ensure constant indoor climate for pharmaceutical storage. Testo will be offering our industry knowledge and displaying our range of solutions for pharmaceutical safety, which help manufacturers meet quality requirements and give the reassurance they are storing and distributing produce safely.
Why is pharmacy temperature control such a hot topic?
Effective temperature monitoring is an absolute necessity for modern day pharmacies. In order to guarantee the safety of patients, pharmacies must ensure drugs and vaccines are stored at certain temperatures, with all such measurements properly documented. The pharmacy guidelines on temperature monitoring, as issued by the MHRA, outline that controlled drugs and vaccines stored in pharmacy fridges must meet benchmarks to ensure the maximum efficacy and shelf-life.
With pharmacy audits becoming more thorough, compliance to guidelines in terms of climate control has become a key part of the regulatory process. To meet such strict protocols, both temperature monitoring and accurate record-keeping are absolutely vital for any facility storing prescription drugs.
The problem is, with the absence of an automated system in place, this not only requires time-consuming work from the pharmacy team, it also increases the risk of mistakes or oversights. Some pharmacists for example, simply perform a daily check on their fridges to see they are still working. What they fail to recognise however is, not only does this fail to reveal any fluctuations, for instance when the fridge door has been open too long, but more importantly it doesn’t give you the chance to react quickly should there be a malfunction.
This can have a hugely negative effect on a pharmacy’s reputation, not to mention the loss of expensive drugs means an enormous financial burden. More concerning still, is the risk of prescriptions not having the intended effect, due to the product themselves being tainted because of improper temperature control. Not everyone is aware, but if pharmaceutical products aren’t stored correctly, this can drastically reduce their effectiveness.
With the testo Saveris 2, 24/7 continuous monitoing has never been simpler
How Pharmacies can control this
So, what can pharmacists do to be sure their pharmaceuticals and therefore patients are kept safe? In the past, fully integrated temperature monitoring systems have been complicated to install and are often very expensive. However, with the availability of new wireless climate monitoring solutions such as testo’s Saveris 2, 24/7 continuous monitoring has never been simpler and more cost effective.
The biggest advantage of such a system is its simplicity. Saveris 2 for example can be installed quite easily without the need for studying complicated instructions. And just a few minutes after commissioning it, the wireless probes start transmitting the first measurement values by WiFi. Done.
Here is a short overview of the key advantages of a wireless climate monitoring system:
- Allows you to ensure pharmaceuticals are always kept in correct conditions thanks to 24/7 continuous monitoring
- Automatic alerts if there is a fluctuation, via email or SMS
- Low cost and simple to use, with systems now available from under £100
Testo’s aim is to help people to understand just how important it is for pharmacies to monitor temperature. We so often hear about the need to monitor conditions in pharmaceutical production and logistics, but as with all delicate produce, quality control must continue right through until it is the hands of the end-customer.

This year at PHEX Manchester, on the 4th & 5th October, we will be introducing the new testo 320 Flue Gas Analyser. Designed to provide the domestic engineer with all the functionality to provide a complete heating system diagnosis, the testo 320 Flue Gas Analyser has a colour graphic display, providing a unique user interface experience to allow simple access to measurement menus for flue gas analysis, draught measurement, pressure, ambient CO measurement, letby & tightness testing, and many more. Use the testo 320 to quickly determine and eliminate malfunctions, monitor legal limit values and spot checks in daily work on servicing heating systems.
The testo 320 Flue Gas Analyser comes as standard with bluetooth communication to android devices such as a smartphone or tablet device using the testo combustion App. This allows users to control the analyser remotely, view graphical data on set parameters, and also provide fast and efficient reports on measurements direct from site via email.
The 320 can also be equipped with optional probes to provide the abilty to carry out gas leak detection on pipework, and also if required measurement of ambient CO & CO2 values.
Also on the stand
Other technology we will have on display includes our award winning testo Smart Probes.
Smartphones and tablets make our day-to-day life easier in almost every situation, so why can’t this apply to contractors’ measurement tasks? That’s precisely what testo’s product developers asked themselves – and the result was the Smart Probes range.
The testo Smart Probes range makes measurement easier, more mobile and more productive than ever before
The eight pocket-sized professional measuring instruments, which can be connected to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth, are operated entirely via the free Smart Probes App. Each instrument has been designed for it’s own specific application, measuring temperature, humidity, pressure or air velocity. Competitively priced, testo Smart Probes are the ideal instruments for HVAC contractors with an enthusiasm for technology.
