Smart Air Conditioning Commissioning

When installing or maintaining air conditioning systems, it is important to ensure that the installation is running correctly and efficiently. Such commissioning and servicing aim at verifying the appropriate standard of the installation and detecting issues in order to improve and document the performance of the unit.

Especially in times of increasing energy costs, maintaining air conditioning systems is gaining more and more significance. A poorly-performing unit can easily exceed the annual heating costs of a building or amount to twice or three times the costs of a building’s lighting system. [1]

In order to improve the efficiency of an air conditioning system and reduce its energy consumption, it is important to use the right testing equipment, which provides all the relevant information in a simple and reliable way. This range of 8 handheld measuring instruments connects to Android or iOS smart devices via Bluetooth and communicates with a free App from Testo. Especially the Smart Probe Refrigeration Set, combining two high-pressure probes and two clamp probes, offers all relevant measuring instruments to ensure simple and accurate measurements of actual pressures and temperatures. Using the transferred data, the Smart Probes App then automatically calculates superheat and sub-cooling on the air conditioning system and helps monitoring and controlling them smart and efficiently. The effects of system adjustments can be seen quickly without the need for manual measurements and calculations. Results of the tests are recorded on site in PDF or Excel format and, after adding customer details to the report, can be emailed directly to the customer or to the office for filing.

t605iIn addition to the Refrigeration Set, two Thermohygrometer Smart Probes testo 605i can be a very useful supplement in order to calculate the air conditioning system’s capacity and can give a more comprehensive image of the unit’s efficiency. By measuring the relative humidity and temperature of supply and return air as well as entering the cubic feet per minute, the thermal energy in British Thermal Units (BTU) per hour, is automatically calculated and displayed in the App. This indicates the amount of heat per hour an air conditioning system can remove from an area and, thus, describes how quickly and effectively the unit cools a room. All measured values of the Refrigeration Set in combination with the two Thermohygrometers are displayed in the same App on one portable device and help engineers to work more efficiently and smarter than ever before.

The launch of the new electrical product range, now adds a third key feature to Testo’s smart way of measuring. The electrical clamp meter testo 770-3 offers the possibility of adding all relevant electrical measurements to your other measurements again in the same Smart Probe App. That means, voltage and current measurements enable the monitoring of an air conditioning system’s electrical efficiency. Additionally, the integrated power measurement function allows an automatic calculation of wattage within the app due to parallel voltage and current measurements. This supports engineers in determining the energy efficiency rating (EER) of the air conditioning unit as a ratio of the system’s cooling energy (in BTU/h) to its electrical energy (in Wh).
